Bilkent University is one of the leading research universities in Turkey. Located in the country's capital city Ankara, it was founded in 1984 with the aim of creating a center of excellence in higher education and research. The name 'Bilkent' exemplifies the founder’s vision: it is an acronym of 'bilim kenti', Turkish for 'city of learning and science'.
Overview
The university is spread across three campuses approximately 12km from the city center. It was the first private university to be established in the country, set up with the explicit aim of becoming a center of excellence in research and teaching. Today it is home to approximately 13,000 students, one of the largest student bodies in the country. Bilkent offers a lively cultural and social atmosphere. Turkish is the language of instruction in many departments, but many others teach in English. Bilkent University prides itself on its high academic standards. Despite its relatively small size, it consistently ranks as one of the top universities in the country. Its research output is prolific, particularly in the sciences. It is also considered one of the best universities in the world for art and humanities courses.
