Established in 1838 and named after tobacco and electric power industrialist James Buchanan Duke, Duke University is a diverse intellectual community with more than 15,000 students. It is known for its programs in the schools of business, law, medicine, public policy and engineering. The strong emphasis on research in these areas has led to numerous notable innovations. The faculty is distinguished, including several Nobel laureates. Duke's campus spans over 8,000 acres on three contiguous campuses in Durham city. Besides the main Durham campus, Duke has a marine lab in Beaufort. The university's prominent athletic program has also gained widespread recognition.
