Established in 2012, the Gran Sasso Science Institute (GSSI) in L'Aquila, Italy, represents the most ambitious initiative towards establishing a center of excellence in research and education in Italy. Headquartered in the heart of the city, GSSI provides both a diverse and international environment with more than 40 countries represented in the student body. The institute comprises of four Ph.D. programs, namely astroparticle physics, computer science, mathematics in natural, social, and life sciences, and urban studies and regional science. There is a strong emphasis on the interdisciplinarity of the teaching methods and research, fostering an environment wherein ideas, knowledge, and innovation can flow freely. Students are profoundly involved in research projects from their initial stages, gaining hands-on experience and knowledge, which is highly valuable. With partnerships and collaborations globally, students are often given exchange opportunities to broaden their insights and vision.
