Haramaya University, formerly known as Alemaya University, was established in 1954. It is one of the oldest public universities in Ethiopia. It's situated in the town of Haramaya in the Harar region. The university is renowned for its strong faculties, particularly in agricultural science and medical education.

Overview

Haramaya University is a pioneer of higher education in Ethiopia, primarily renowned for its agricultural and health studies. Originally established with the help of Oklahoma State University, it introduced Ethiopia's first faculties of agriculture and veterinary medicine which continue to have significant influence in the country’s agriculture sector. Today, the institution has 14 different colleges and faculties and runs 102 undergraduate, 92 masters and 15 PhD programmes, serving over 35,000 students. The campus, situated around 510 km from Ethiopia's capital city, Addis Ababa, includes classrooms, laboratories, libraries, research centers, dormitory facilities, and sports fields. The University's main objective is to produce high quality, competent, and competitive graduates in diverse fields to serve the community, the country, and the globe.
