Overview

Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI) is an Indian deemed university. It began as an initiative by the Department of Atomic Energy, under the leadership of Rangachari Chidambaram, to streamline research and development activities in the atomic energy programs by educating and training the manpower in a structured manner. It basically meant integrating certain identified institutions like Bhabha Atomic Research Center, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, etc. under an academic umbrella. HBNI was a response to increasing global emphasis on 'knowledge production'. The curriculum of programs are each designed to combine traditional academic instruction with research. The HBNI currently has over 30,000 personnel and is headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Its campuses and affiliated institutions all over India offer various programs.
