The ICAR-National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), originally started as Imperial Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying in 1923, is India's premier Institute for dairy research. The Institute's research and activities are organised according to national needs. The major activities undertaken by the Institution encompass research, teaching and extension. The research programs are directed towards increasing milk production and productivity, finding ways to provide more nutritious dairy products, trying to improve the health of the dairy animals and overall development in the field of dairy science. The teaching programs cover undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the field of dairy science under the aegis of the Deemed University status. The extension programmes were initiated to transfer the know-how from the laboratory to the farmers' field to increase the productivity of dairy animals and to educate the farmers about the latest developments in the field of dairy science.
