Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, also known as TSU, is a prestigious higher institution in the heart of Georgia. Established in 1918, it is the oldest university in the region whose crucial mission is to foster the intellectual, cultural, social and economic development in Georgia.

Overview

TSU is the oldest university in Georgia and the Caucasity, which was opened on 8 February 1918, building on the European-type higher school, which had functioned in Tbilisi since 1893. Ivane Javakhishvili, Professor of Historiography, is considered as a founder of the university. Over the years, more than 240 thousand students were educated at Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University. More than a century-long history of the university is closely related to the intellectual, cultural, social life, and economic strength not only in Georgia, but throughout the Caucasity. As the first higher education institution, TSU established the national higher education traditions and it is the leading national research and educational center in Georgia.
