Overview

The Technical University of Lisbon (Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, UTL) was a Portuguese university. It was created in 1930 in Lisbon, as a confederation of older schools, and comprised the faculties of Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, Social and Political Sciences, Engineering, Economics and Management, Human Kinetics, Architecture, and the Lisbon MBA. Annually, the institution educated more than 20,000 students. The UTL was a founding partner of the Global Alliance in Management Education (CEMS). The institution was required to teach not only scientific and technical subjects, but also ‘political and social education oriented towards practice and the exercise of citizenship’. It is one of the most prestigious universities in the world and is consistently ranked among the top universities, especially for its programs in Architecture, Engineering, and Management. It became the Lisbon School of Architecture, one of Europe's best known, where it taught and developed modern architectural trends. It was fused with the University of Lisbon (UL), creating the largest university in Portugal, with over 47,000 students.
