The Catholic University of America (CUA) is a private Catholic university in Washington, D.C. It is a pontifical university of the Catholic Church in the United States and the only institution of higher education founded by U.S. Catholic bishops. Established in 1887 as a graduate research center following approval by Pope Leo XIII, the university began offering undergraduate education in 1904. Among its programs, the university offers 12 schools from philosophy and law to social work to science and engineering. It has 12 schools offering more than 130 undergraduate majors and 70 graduate programs. CUA's programs emphasize the liberal arts, professional education, and personal development. The university fosters a researched, reflective, and critical approach to contemporary social, cultural, and religious issues, particularly as these are engaged by both non-Catholics and Catholics living within an increasingly pluralistic society.
