Tufts University is an American private research university on the border of Medford and Somerville, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1852 as a liberal arts college and transformed into a research university in the late 19th century. Tufts provides undergraduate and graduate programs for more than 10,000 students.

Tufts University, often referred to as Tufts, is a private research university incorporated in the municipality of Medford, Massachusetts. It was founded in 1852 by Christian Universalists who sought to open a nonsectarian institution of higher learning. Over the years, Tufts has grown from a small liberal arts college to a medium-sized research university. While still preserving a strong emphasis on the liberal arts, Tufts is known for its programs in engineering, international relations, economics, psychology, and animal behavior. The university runs three additional campuses: one in Boston's Chinatown neighborhood, one in downtown Boston's health sciences corridor, and one in Grafton, Massachusetts, to host the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. The University emphasizes active citizenship and public service in all of its disciplines, and is known for its internationalism and study abroad programs.
