University Centre in Svalbard

The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) is the world's northernmost higher education institution, located in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. The institution provides high-quality research-based education in arctic biology, arctic geology, arctic geophysics, and arctic technology.

Overview

The University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS) is a state-owned limited company, which is 100% owned by the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research. Formally established in 1993, UNIS offers study courses at the undergraduate, graduate and doctorate level in arctic biology, geology, geophysics and technology. It presently has about 350 students. The institution's geographic location makes it an ideal venue for several types of research, ranging from biology to astronomy. The courses offered are the equivalent of those taught on the mainland, but the main difference is UNIS's important emphasis on fieldwork and research. It follows the philosophy that it is crucial for students to gain field experience in order to fully understand and appreciate the theoretical background to their studies. In terms of its ranking, it is difficult to definitively state its position as it doesn’t usually feature on global university ranking lists due to its specialised nature and small size.
