The Official University of Santiago, better known as the University of Chile, is a premier public tertiary education institution. Its main campus is in Santiago, encompassing five campus locations across the city and attracting students from around the world.

The University of Chile, founded in 1842, is a public, national, and state-owned institution that conducts teaching, research, and outreach activities in all areas of knowledge. This institution has made substantial contributions to the nation's scientific, technological, social, and arts development. It comprises of 14 faculties and four interdisciplinary institutes located in different areas of Santiago. The university offers 66 undergraduate degree programs to more than 20,800 students, 38 doctoral programs, 119 master's programs, and 66 specialized programs, with nearly 6,200 situated in postgraduate programs. The main strength of the University of Chile is its faculty members, who are responsible for most of Chile’s cutting edge research. The university operates the national seismographic network, several hospitals and clinical centers, as well as a variety of field stations and research centers all across the country. The architectural buildings located on the main campuses are historical monuments and are among the great cultural and architectural treasures of the nation.
