The University of Coimbra (UC) is a Portuguese public university in Coimbra, Portugal. Established in 1290, it is one of the oldest universities in continuous operation in the world, the oldest university of Portugal, and one of its largest higher education and research institutions.

Overview

UC is a foundational reference in higher education and scientific research in Portugal, due to the quality of the courses taught at its eight colleges and to the advances achieved in pure and applied research in various areas. The university's top fields of study are arts and humanities, life sciences and bio-medicine, natural sciences, social sciences, and technology and engineering. The university has around 20,000 students spread across its eight faculties, and it provides a strong environment for international students with several courses available in English. UC is placed in the 1st percent of universities in the world according to QS World University Rankings.
