Overview

Founded in 1559, the University of Évora is the second oldest university in Portugal. Initially, it was run by the Jesuits and it was their intellectual and educational traditions that had a formative influence on the institution. In 1759, it was shut down due to the expulsion of the Jesuits, but after two centuries it was revived again in 1973. Since then, the university has been dedicated to high quality teaching, advancement, and dissemination of research. It offers undergraduate, masters, and doctoral programs in several fields of knowledge, with significant emphasis on areas linked with regional economy and culture. The faculties of this university are well established in the categories of Arts, Sciences, Technology, and Medicine. More than just an educational institution, it forms strong partnerships with society in all sectors, greatly contributing to the betterment of the region culturally, economically, and socially.
