The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, referred to as UM, is one of the top public universities in the US. Established in 1817 in Detroit as the University of Michigania, it moved to its current location in Ann Arbor in 1837. UM has a reputation for its research work, with one of the largest annual research expenditures of any university in the United States. The university offers degree programs in Law, Medicine, Engineering, Pharmacy, Social Sciences, Humanities, Business and many others. It also has participating in athletics program, the Wolverines, which competes in Division I of the NCAA. Notable alumni include Gerald Ford, James Earl Jones, and Lucy Liu. It's a large institution with nearly 30,000 undergraduate students and about 16,000 graduate and professional students.
