University of Salamanca

The University of Salamanca (USAL) is the oldest university in Spain and one of the oldest in the world. Located in Salamanca, western Spain, it was founded in 1218. Today, it has a student body of around 28,000 and offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Overview

The University of Salamanca is renowned for its courses in humanities and has strong departments in languages, philosophy, history, and geography. As well as being bilingual in Spanish and English, many courses are also taught in other languages such as French, German and Portuguese. The university is also known for its research capabilities, with many of its departments being recognized internationally. The campus is a mix of old and new, with some buildings dating back to the 13th century. It has a multi-cultural environment with students from across the globe studying there. USAL is one of the most important centers for the study of Hispanism in Spain and globally, offering an extensive teaching program and numerous research projects related to Spain, Latin America, and the Hispanic world. It's also very active in international exchanges for both students and faculty, mostly within the Erasmus platform that it helped to create. The library at the University of Salamanca is one of the most important academic libraries in Spain, housing an invaluable collection of manuscripts, incunabula, and early printed books.
