Initially meant to serve the needs of the Coloured population during apartheid, it has now grown into a national institution, attracting students from all demographics. The university has seven faculties: Arts, Community and Health Sciences, Dentistry, Economic and Management Sciences, Education, Law, Natural Sciences, and Theology. Its research focus includes HIV/AIDS, nanotechnology, molecular biology, astrophysics, human rights, social justice, and more.
