Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU) is the first modern university ever established in the country and one of the two national universities in Vietnam. It is the largest comprehensive higher education and research center in Vietnam, bringing together leading scholars from all over the country.

VNU is described as the 'flagship' institution of Vietnam's higher education system. It is similar to the U.S. system where there is a major regional university that coordinates other institutions in conducting joint programs, sharing resources and expertise. VNU includes a large number of institutes, faculties and research centers, and operates across several campuses including the main campus, and sites in other parts of Hanoi.
