Founded in 1793 with funds bequeathed by Ephraim Williams, a colonel in the Massachusetts militia who died in the Battle of Lake George, Williams College is the second-oldest institution of higher learning in Massachusetts. The college’s 450-acre campus is nestled in the Berkshires in western Massachusetts and offers a comprehensive range of majors in arts, sciences and humanities. Williams College is often featuring among the top liberal arts colleges in the United States and is known for its student-faculty interaction and for the strong role it plays in its students' lives. The college has an extensive program that conserves energy and recycles a vast percentage of its waste. It houses the largest collection of British Art outside the U.K and has several other museums and art centers.
